About the Art
I work mostly with arylics and oils in several genres of painting; figurative, landscape, fantasy. For those who like labels, I like to call it traditional romantic realism.
I paint on many different surfaces; different types of Canvas, hardboard, and occasionally watercolor paper. Many of the Paintings were painted 'plen air', on location in Newton County, probably the hilliest, least populated, and most beautiful County in the State of Arkansas. The Prints are Limited Edition Reproductions made with Archival Inks on Acid Free Paper. Please go here for information on my prints.
Much of my work is a snapshot in time of Newton County Arkansas. It sounds cliché, but this area really is a throwback in time. People still collect eggs, ride horses, work mules, and we even have “Constables” & “Bootleggers”. Church is a most important part of local society and we have “pie suppers” and “benefit auctions” on a weekly basis. Old folks watch the cars go by from their front porch, and a good portion of the population keep gardens. Turkey Hunting, Berry Picking, Bread making, and raising livestock are discussed more often than I-Pods, HDTV, and new car payments. Hidden Mushroom and Ginseng patches, forgotten homesteads, and hard to find Caves and Waterfalls are more sought after than the newest car, or the latest TV show. I suppose that is why I am here, life is what I paint.
I see painting as a form of comunication. I am a pretty straightforward guy, and my art follows suit. I think paintings should say something to the viewer, and that they shouldn't need an interpreter. I suppose I could make "splatter" paintings and come up with all sorts of interesting pyscho babble to explain them, but I'll leave that to the experts, there see to be an ample supply them. Because of all the new, easier, and possibly more effective forms of communication that permiate or society these days, a large part of the paintings being produced fall in to the "art for art's sake" category - experimental art. I don't make much of this, and when I do, it very seldom makes it out of my studio. A fellow "artist" once in a very condescending manner, looked down upon my work, and said "Oh, your one of those arists' that paint's "pretty" pictures". ...Well, ...uh... Yes, Thank You. Call me old fashioned, but I still believe a painting can be a "pretty picture". A great artist once said, "The first priority of a painting is to improve the look of a white wall".
I've done more shows than I care to think about, won a few ribbons and awards, been featured in many galleries, magazines and articles, and have work spread all over the country, and in many others. I do not enter "competitions" or strive for accolades in the contemporary art world. If I can simply put a smile on your face, or give you a moment peace, I've done my job well.
